Title Onyx & Ivory

Author Mindee Arnett

Section Covered Part II – The Errant Prince (Chapters 12-31)

Initial Thoughts

I was really excited to continue on to Part II after finishing Part I, The Traitor’s Daughter.  Once again, I am kicking myself for not starting this book sooner.  I can’t stop listening to it.  I am going to be finished with it probably tomorrow and then I’ll have to find another audiobook.  This is exactly what I am trying to avoid.  Why am I so good at picking books that I think I’ll like? Why can’t I pick something that’s slightly less good so I’m ok with listening to it slowly?

Favorite Part

The big reveal of Kate’s father’s secret.  It was both sad and happy to see that Kate has a brother.  I was happy that she got a piece of her father back, but also sad that she realized she didn’t know her father as well as she thought.

This book handles big themes of lying, secrets, and growing up in a way that I really appreciate.  Kate is 19 in this story and while she has been an adult in most ways since her father was executed, she grows up a lot in this section of the story.  From the revelation of her brother to her relationship with Corwin, Kate learns a lot about being an adult.

Fun Fact

I’m not really sure why, but for some reason it makes me really happy to read books featuring main characters that I imagine look a little like me.  Kate is described as having long black hair and dark eyes.  Given that I also have black hair and brown eyes, I am weirdly pleased that we have something in common.  I guess it’s nice to read about someone you relate to in some way.

Hopes for Part III

More Master Wraith!  He’s my favorite.  The mysterious voice of reason.  I love him.  He could totally betray them and end up becoming a villain and I don’t even think I would care.  He’s so wise and interesting.

Main enemy reveal. As much as I love this story, who is the villain? Who are our heroes fighting? Part III needs to have the answers.
