**Disclaimer, I have not read Nocturna or any spoilers about it. I received my copy yesterday. The following post is pure speculation on what I think I will like and dislike about it.**
Title Nocturna
Author Maya Motanye
Description from Amazon
To Finn Voy, magic is two things: a knife to hold under the chin of anyone who crosses her…and a disguise she shrugs on as easily as others pull on cloaks.
As a talented faceshifter, it’s been years since Finn has seen her own face, and that’s exactly how she likes it. But when Finn gets caught by a powerful mobster, she’s forced into an impossible mission: steal a legendary treasure from Castallan’s royal palace or be stripped of her magic forever.
After the murder of his older brother, Prince Alfehr is first in line for the Castallan throne. But Alfie can’t help but feel that he will never live up to his brother’s legacy. Riddled with grief, Alfie is obsessed with finding a way to bring his brother back, even if it means dabbling in forbidden magic.
But when Finn and Alfie’s fates collide, they accidentally unlock a terrible, ancient power—which, if not contained, will devour the world. And with Castallan’s fate in their hands, Alfie and Finn must race to vanquish what they have unleashed, even if it means facing the deepest darkness in their pasts.
Initial Thoughts
Thief + Prince + Forbidden Magic = PERFECTION
I have very high hopes for this book.
Cover Art
This cover is spectacular. I love the colors – I don’t have anything else like it on my shelf. And, I love the tile design. It’s so intricate and it reminds me of something that would be handmade.
Notes on the Dust Jacket
As previously stated in my Hype Post of Dark Shores – If this isn’t told in alternating POV narration – I WILL BE UPSET.
Also, faceshifting?? I’m totally getting an Arya from Game of Thrones vibe and I LOVE THAT.
Final Thoughts
Rumor has it that this is a Latinx-inspired story and I’m really excited about that. I love how so many books in 2019 are allowing me to explore new cultures.
Also, I don’t think I’ve addressed this yet but, I’m kind of a crime story junkie. I love that this story features a murder and I want the story to have something to do with solving it. My inner detective needs to solve all crimes in all books that I read.
I think this book has a ton of promising features and I can honestly say if it doesn’t live up to the hype, I will be sorely disappointed.
